YORK FOR EUROPE - INVITATION TO TAKE PART IN A LOCAL SURVEY
    brought by York For Europe

Which food, medicine or fuel shortages are affecting US locally in York or surrounding areas?

Disentangling Brexit and the effects of the Covid pandemic is complicated, but retailers are confirming that food shortages are due largely to Brexit. The Co-op has admitted as much and M&S has clearly blamed Brexit for closure of its outlets in France. Tesco links some fuel shortages to Brexit.

The Economist’s assessment of factors contributing to shortages is that Brexit is the main factor (“Out of stock”, 4th September 2021, page 17-18).

Dominic Grieve, in a Zoom conference of the European Movement (of which York for Europe is a member) on 11th September, stated that “Remain’s predictions of the impact of Brexit have been proved staggeringly correct.” Brexit isn’t working.

- The Trade and Co-operation Agreement negotiated with the EU is clearly totally inadequate to support our interests. The government could easily (but hasn’t) sign up to agreements to resolve most if not all trade issues.

- The Brexit situation is now at a tipping point where campaigning could be particularly effective.

The European Movement aims to appeal to people on the basis they want the best for the country; some thought Brexit was the answer and may now be amenable to changing their mind in the light of reality. It will then press the government for measures to develop a closer and smoother working relationship with the EU not just in trade but in all areas of life.

HELP US FIND OUT HOW SHORTAGES OF FOOD, MEDICINES AND FUEL ARE AFFECTING YORK PEOPLE

- Please send us details of the food supply situation (good or bad) in any of the shops (supermarkets, independent grocers, market stalls) you usually use. A pro-forma response sheet is attached.

- Rely on your own observations, or have an informal chat with shop owners or staff – whatever you feel comfortable with.

- Food suppliers’ concerns or hopes for the future are useful to know about.

- If you’re interested in surveying supermarkets and shops more widely, please do.

- Do send information on any medicine shortages. Some York practices, for example, have delayed flu vaccinations due to problems with vaccine delivery.

- Note street names/postcode for the outlets you report on, so we can map the situation. Store names are helpful, but we will NOT use the names of independent retailers.
