Let’s go for coffee!

This expression has gained great popularity in Ukraine over the past few years as Ukraine is in the midst of a rapid development of coffee consumption culture. For many Ukrainians meeting with friends, having breakfast or going a walk in the autumn park means having a cup of cappuccino or Americano.

Some people feel that coffee is an essential ritual every morning, others find it an important attribute of communication with colleagues, still others take it as a reason to walk around the city so that they can visit their favourite atmospheric coffee shop. Coffee used to be an ordinary energising drink, but it has become a real work of art with its own charms and delights.

The origins of coffee culture in Ukraine are invariably connected with Lviv – the city that has acquired the unofficial status of the coffee capital of Ukraine.

It is believed that coffee was first brought to Lviv by Cossack Yuriy Kulchytsky in the 17th century. According to the legend, it was Yuriy Kulchytsky who came up with the idea to add honey or sugar to sweeten the bitter coffee drink. Lviv coffee houses quickly became centers of communication and meeting places for artists, writers, political leaders.

Today Lviv is a city of countless original coffee houses for every taste. In Lviv people truly love coffee and they really know how to make it and to how to drink it. Various fairs and coffee festivals are regularly held in the city. One can have a special guided tour dedicated exclusively to Lviv coffee houses.

Every Ukrainian who comes to Lviv from another city certainly wants to taste Lviv coffee. It is the memory of being in Lviv coffee shops that becomes the best souvenir from Lviv.

Ходімо на каву!

Це вислів, який за кілька останніх років набув величезної популярності в Україні, де спостерігається стрімкий розвиток культури споживання кави.

Зустріч з друзями, сніданок чи прогулянка осіннім парком зараз у багатьох українців супроводжується філіжанкою ароматного капучино чи американо. Для когось кава – невід’ємний ритуал кожного ранку, для когось – важливий атрибут спілкування з колегами, для когось – привід пройтися містом, щоб зайти в улюблену атмосферну кав’ярню.

З прагматичного напою для бадьорості кава перетворилася на справжній витвір мистецтва з властивими лише їй чарами та принадами.

Витоки кавової культури в Україні незмінно пов’язують зі Львовом – містом, яке набуло неофіційного статусу кавової столиці України.

Уважається, що до Львова каву вперше привіз козак Юрій Кульчицький у 17 столітті. За легендою, саме Юрій Кульчицький придумав додавати мед чи цукор, щоб підсолоджувати гіркий кавовий напій. Львівські кав’ярні швидко стали осередками спілкування та місцями зустрічей культурних і політичних діячів.

Сьогодні Львів – це місто незчисленних оригінальних кав’ярень на будь-який смак. У Львові каву дійсно вміють і люблять, як готувати, так і пити. У місті регулярно проводяться різноманітні ярмарки та кавові фестивалі. Також існують спеціальні екскурсійні маршрути, присвячені львівським кав’ярням.

Кожен українець, який приїжджає до Львова з іншого міста, неодмінно прагне скуштувати львівської кави. Саме спогад про львівські кав’ярні стає найкращим сувеніром зі Львова.
