Hello from Southern Germany
Twenty Five years of living and working in the city of York cannot simply be put behind us. After long deliberations and preparations and a difficult decision process we moved to Germany last August. All is well here.
We have been in a serious lockdown since December, with all non-essential shops and facilities closed. All schools are closed too. There is a curfew between 9pm and 6am. People are pretty disciplined and stick to rules.
We feel safe and in the best of hands and are quite blown away by the medical care here, which centres on prevention rather than cure. Everything hangs on the words coming from the lips of Markus Söder, the Bavarian federal state prime minister. Some days he is popular, others less so as he manoeuvres his way through the Covid-19 situation. His measures are stricter than other German federal states which earns criticism as well as praise.
The situation has improved enough now however, for schools to partially reopen in two weeks time. Not many vaccinations in sight yet though ..we have been able to register for the vaccine but not much is happening yet. The over nineties are getting it, plus some care home residents. Problems with the supply as we all know. But we’ll get there and are not really worried.
There is some concern about how quickly it has been rolled out and approved as an emergency measure in the UK, the USA and a few other countries. Too fast perhaps? Germany tends to go for 100% certainty and waits and observes outcomes for a while longer. Meanwhile all over 60s have been given several FFP2 masks free of charge and are now being given more at a hugely reduced cost. Cloth masks are not acceptable anymore, we all have to wear FFP2 masks everywhere.
As for Brexit, well, it’s on the back burner here really. Apart from incredulous head shaking and repeated questions of “why?” “What was the point?” We read about it mainly in the UK press and occasionally in more serious German newspapers in the context of the economic and trade barrier consequences of this fallacy.
Oh and very recently, in a less serious paper: “Brits look forward to summer holidays in Mallorca with no German tourist in sight”. Germans don’t often do self irony so this was a welcome headline in a funny way.
I miss my York friends and the moors and the sea. Were it not for Brexit we would never have moved. 25 very happy years in York (35 in the UK all in all) lie behind me. At this moment in time I don’t know yet whether this move will be longer term or not.
Like Germany with the vaccine, we are observing from afar and waiting it out to see what develops. Whatever happens, for now, York remains “home”.

Hallo aus Süddeutschland an alle Freunde in York So leicht ist es nicht, 25 wunderschöne Jahre in York wegzustecken. Wir haben immer glücklich in York gelebt….. doch letzten Sommer sind wir nach Süddeutschland umgezogen. Ein langer und schwieriger Entscheidungsprozess, doch letztendlich hatten wir das Gefühl dass uns in Anbetracht der politischen Lage nichts weiteres übrig blieb. Mein Mann ist Brite, ich bin auch in Deutschland weder geboren noch aufgewachsen, und unser 19 jähriger Sohn ist auch mit uns gezogen. Es ist also keine “Heim- oder Rückkehr” in unserem Fall.
Wir fühlen uns in guten Händen hier und soweit war der Umzug die richtige Entscheidung. Wir vermissen jedoch die wunderschöne Stadt York, wir vermissen Freunde und das Meer. Auch die Moors und die wilde Natur im UK fehlen uns. Hier ist alles so ordentlich und aufgeräumt…. Doch einfach anders schön. Wir geniessen den Schnee und die viel helleren Tage, den oft blauen Himmel und die Sonne.
Wir warten darauf dass hier endlich auch gegen Covid-19 geimpft wird. Die Schulen haben seit Januar geschlossen doch sollen sie, zumindest im Wechselunterricht, am 22.2 wieder öffnen. Wir tragen überall nur FFP2 Masken, keine Stoffmasken, und alle über 60 jährigen haben von der Regierung eine Anzahl kostenloser FFP2 Masken bekommen.
Über den Brexit wird weiterhin der Kopf geschüttelt. Die Frage nach dem Warum und dem Wozu tritt immer wieder auf. Zumindest sah ich neulich im Vorbeigehen im Supermarkt in der BILD Zeitung (Oh Graus!) dass die Briten sich schon auf Urlaub in Mallorca ohne deutsche Touristen freuen. Irgendwie eine amüsante Headline da man in Deutschland selten Selbstironie praktiziert.
Uns geht es gut hier, das kann ich nicht leugnen…. Aber York bleibt in unseren Herzen unser Zuhause. Ob wir hier bleiben oder nicht haben wir noch nicht klar entschieden. Mal sehen.
